Grok-1 LLM Partly Goes Open Source
In March 2024, xAI announced it was open-sourcing its Grok-1 large language model, aligning with Elon Musk's stated intention to make advanced AI technologies broadly accessible and challenge the closed approach of competitors like OpenAI.

Grok-1 is a substantial 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model developed from scratch by xAI. The MoE architecture means the model utilizes specialized subnetworks ("experts") and dynamically routes input tokens to the most relevant experts, allowing for greater efficiency in training and inference compared to monolithic models of similar size. The open-source release included the base model weights and the network architecture under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, which allows for commercial use and modification with attribution.
However, the release notably did not include the training data or the specific fine-tuning code used to create the Grok chatbot available on the X platform (formerly Twitter). This means the open-source Grok-1 represents the raw, pre-trained base model checkpoint (from October 2023) and doesn't directly replicate the behavior or real-time information access capabilities of the fine-tuned chatbot integrated with X. The model files themselves are substantial, distributed via a magnet link leading to a torrent download of approximately 300GB.
This release was significant as it made one of the largest language models at the time available to the public, allowing researchers to study its architecture and weights. Yet, the lack of fine-tuning details and training data limited its immediate "out-of-the-box" usability for creating direct competitors to polished chatbots, leading some to question the practical impact beyond research.
This move fit into Musk's broader critique of companies like OpenAI (which he co-founded but later left), accusing them of abandoning initial open-source principles in pursuit of profit.
The Grok Chatbot and its Market Context
The Grok chatbot, initially powered by the Grok-1 model, launched for paid subscribers on X in November 2023. It was designed to answer questions with "a bit of wit and a rebellious streak," leveraging real-time access to information from the X platform. It positioned itself as an alternative to other AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, offering a distinct personality and up-to-the-minute data access. Benchmarks released by xAI showed Grok-1 achieving competitive performance on various tasks, including a 62.9% score on the GSM8k math benchmark.
Strategic Significance of the Grok-1 Open Release
By open-sourcing the Grok-1 base model, xAI aimed to provide broad access to the underlying technology, contrasting with the restricted access offered by many other leading AI models. The release gained prominence amidst the growing tensions and legal disputes between Musk and OpenAI, highlighting Musk's ongoing criticism of AI companies prioritizing profit over safety and transparency.
Update (April 2025):
While the open-sourcing of Grok-1 in March 2024 was a notable event, subsequent developments have clarified xAI's approach. Since the release of Grok-1:
- Grok-1.5 (announced March 2024) and Grok-1.5V (Vision, announced April 2024) introduced improved capabilities and multimodality but were not open-sourced. They were made available to early testers and premium users on X.
- Grok-2 (announced August 2024), featuring further enhancements and image generation, was also not open-sourced, despite some earlier speculation or statements suggesting previous versions might be opened as new ones arrived.
- Grok-3 (announced February 2025), the latest iteration, remains proprietary and is primarily accessible via X subscription tiers.
Therefore, as of now, only the original Grok-1 base model weights and architecture have been released under an open-source license. xAI's more advanced and fine-tuned models remain closed and part of their commercial offering through the X platform, tempering the initial expectations set by the Grok-1 release for a fully open development path for their flagship models.
